Dreamcatcher
3D Audio Instrument
Ten speakers in a circle and a tablet to place sound loops anywhere in the room around you.
Description
Dreamcatcher is a 3D audio instrument.
The user is surrounded by speakers, allowing for an immersive 3D sound experience.
A tablet is used to control the sound. Eight individual sound sources can be manipulated and placed around the user. For every sound source, the user can choose an instrument, an effect to apply to it and a note sequence.
A global volume and effect mixer allows live fine-tuning of the different sounds.
Technical Implementation
The implementation is split into two main parts:
User interface:
The user interface is implemented in Python. It handles the visuals shown on the tablet and the user's input. It converts information such as sound source position, sound and effect choices and volume adjustments, and sends it to the second part of the implementation.
Sound handling:
The sound is handled in Max MSP. It receives the converted information from Python and adjusts the sounds accordingly. All sounds and effects are stored in Max MSP. An Ambisonics plugin sends the sounds to the correct speakers, creating a 3D audio experience.
Both programs run on a PC and communicate with each other. The PC streams the interface to the tablet, allowing for a more intuitive interaction for the user.
